Effect of Vagotomy on Mitotic Activity of Duodenal Epithelium in Rat

Abstract
|
|
|
To observe an influence of mechanical block of vagus on mitotic activity´ of the intestinal epithelium in adult rat, duodenum were processed at 1, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours following bilateral vagotomy for histological observation and calculation of mitotic cells.
The results were analyzed and compared with each other as follows;
1. Mitotic cells were slightly increased than control at 6 and 12 hours after vagotomy.
2. Mitotic index was highly increased at 24 hours following vagotomy but no more thereafter.
It seems that bilateral vagotomy induced the acceleration of mitosis and turnover. time. in the intestinal epithelium.
